

The action sequences are fantastically delivered throughout. This one comes with a healthy dose of mirth inserted right into the funny bone without compromising the overall tone of the film. & TM.The first six movies have admittedly all suffered from the mistake of taking themselves too seriously, injecting often cringe-worthy and largely unsuccessful attempts at levity.

Ridley and Boyega, both 23 years old, have natural screen command and are likeable from the get-go. In a world of aliens and talking robots, this point should be the least of their concerns when it comes to suspension of disbelief. The core argument, it seemed, was that female and Black characters were ‘unbelievable’. Some die-hard, ‘purist’ fans (and I say ‘purist’ with sarcastic disdain here), cried foul when Abrams cast two relative unknowns, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in lead roles. What is evident about Abrams’ direction, is that he has embraced the magic of the original trilogy while discarding much of the prequel trilogy’s pitfalls. Breathe….slow down….be mindful of The Force…. The older returning cast members provide just enough presence to successfully hand over the proverbial lightsabre to the next gen.

The new cast members are charismatic, fun and likeable. The special effects are seamless, providing enough striking and convincing shots and sequences to sate any fan and newcomer’s appetite. The locations are largely real-world, rendering the environments to feel organic rather than computer-rendered. & TM.As a die-hard fan of the franchise (I use the word ‘jedi’ on a daily basis as a term of affection and even named one of my Jack Russells ‘Jedi’), I am truly ecstatic to report that the saga’s glory days are well and truly back…and then some.Ībrams, 11 years old at the time of the first film’s release in ’77, has delivered a cinematic uppercut to all the doubters out there.
